More and more people are into domestic partnerships nowadays. This may be in preparation for marriage or couples who believe in simple bondage without the complications and legal impediments of marriage or perhaps to split the rent for the apartment. Lived in partners would tend to just forgive and forget and get on with their lives together, or better yet, one moves out totally.
